How To Prepare Your Home For The Summer With Shutters And Blinds

Now that the middle of the summer season and the children’s school holidays are approaching, it is time to get your home ready for yourself and guests to enjoy. With the UK’s recent heatwaves, we know doing housework and simple tasks can seem like a struggle, and so we would like to help with some tips and tricks to make those little jobs easier.

Whether you are just looking for a few ways to keep your house cool in the summer, keep homes

Shutters

Of course, being suppliers of a variety of window dressings, including our beautiful bespoke shutters, it wouldn’t be right if we didn’t supply you with the many benefits that window dressings can have throughout the seasons. Every home would benefit from a window shade during summer as it can instantly reduce the temperature of your home by blocking out sunlight.

Shutters are a great way to ventilate your home and give you easy access to your windows behind. We recommend opening your windows/doors behind your shutters to allow the breeze to come in but keeping the shutter panels closed to block out light and keep your home private. By facing your louvres up, you allow light to come in as the sun will reflect off the white finish but block it from directly coming into your space, keeping it cool and ventilated on those warmer days. This is just one of the many benefits of shutters.

Blinds

This is the same with many blind styles. If you are out for the day, enjoying some time at the beach or even just off to work, try and keep blinds and curtains closed in order to prevent the sunlight from warming your home during the day. If possible with your windows, keep them vented but not open whilst you are away from your home, to allow in some air and create a cooler space for you to come back to.

One of our latest additions to our blind range is the very useful insect screens. These are very popular in homes around the US and are now making their way around many homes in the UK. It’s very easy to just want to open every window and door possible in your home during the summer to let as much air in as possible but doing so, allows unwanted guests to come in also.

One of the interior trends this year is Indoor/outdoor home – Spending a lot of time indoors has inspired homeowners to create a space where they and guests can enjoy themselves without feeling so enclosed as we were during the lockdown and our insect screens can help create a way to enjoy having your windows and doors open throughout the summer without the pests coming in.

These screens work similar to our pleated blind systems, sitting within a window frame to create a stylish, discreet finish to the window. They are designed with the smallest of vents to allow airflow through and keep your home cool whilst keeping insects and pests out, the perfect addition to your home this summer.

Cleaning

One of the first steps in your summer clean is to clean your windows. Your windows at the front of your home are the first thing visitors see when they arrive and so giving them a quick shine, can instantly make your home more inviting. With the various type of weather we have during spring, it can be difficult to find the time to find time for this task as part of your spring cleaning schedule. During the winter, with all of the wind and rain that the UK experiences, you are more likely to get a build-up of road dust, dirt, and of course raindrops on your windows.

For homes with uPVC windows, a simple wipe with a microfibre cloth and some soapy water will help remove the initial dirt on the glass and frames and then finish off with a glass cleaner of choice to wipe away those marks inside and out. If you are a shutter owner, then be sure to be careful with your cleaning products as chemical-based sprays and wipes can damage your shutters and their painted finish. Our Waterproof shutters are completely water-resistant but we still only recommend baby wipes and microfibre cloths to give them a summer shine just to be on the safe side.
