One of the reasons shutters are better than curtains is that they do not hold odours or get dirty very easily. With some simple cleaning and maintenance, shutters will continue to look their best and last for many years. We’ve put together some simple tips on how to care for shutters to ensure they look pristine and function as they should for a long time.
Cleaning your shutters
There are going to be times when dust and dirt appear on your shutters. Dust will accumulate when there is poor airflow, such as when your windows are closed and no air can escape. If you have children, they might also leave dirty hand marks on the louvres. Luckily, it is really easy to clean your shutters to prevent issues in the future.
Regular dusting
Use a feather duster or a soft, dry microfibre cloth to dust your shutters weekly. This can be done quickly by closing the louvres and gently wiping them on both sides. Watch our Kent manager Sam demonstrate this method in a video on ‘How to clean your shutters‘.
Make sure you also clean inside the frames and windowsills, as dust and dirt can collect here, particularly when the windows are open.
Spot cleaning
For minor stains or spots, we recommend using fragrance-free baby wipes or a damp cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals, washing up liquid or even water, on all shutter materials, as this can damage the finish of your shutters, cause warping (especially on wooden shutters) and remove their UV coating.
Handling your shutters

Our expert team are on hand for damages or repairs for your shutters
It is highly likely you’ll be opening and closing your shutters most days, so make sure you handle them with care by following these guidelines:
- Always open and close your shutter panels gently with two hands to avoid putting unnecessary strain on the hinges and slats.
- Always close the louvres when opening back-to-back onto another panel.
- If your shutter slats become too loose or tight over time, adjust them with a small screwdriver using this tutorial. This prevents the louvres from getting damaged from overuse.
- Regularly inspect your shutters for any signs of damage or wear. Early detection can prevent small issues from becoming major problems.
By following these care and maintenance tips, you can ensure your shutters remain a stunning, functional feature in your home for many years to come. If you have any questions or concerns about your shutters, get in touch with our team who will be able to help.
