How to keep your Bedroom cool in the summer

It’s got the hot and sticky time of year when homeowners are looking for the best ways of how to keep your bedroom cool during the summer season. As the scorching summer heat rolls in, it becomes increasingly challenging to keep our homes comfortable and cool. Sleep is important for our well-being and if you are looking for tips for better sleep in the hotter seasons, keep on reading.

We want to help our customers enjoy summer at home by giving them lots of ideas for using our home products, as well as many others. Fortunately, there are several simple and effective ways to beat the summer heat and create a cool oasis in your bedroom. In this week’s post, we’ll explore a variety of ways to help you keep your bedroom cool during the summer months.

How our products can benefit you:

White shutters

Choose white shutters to reduce heat from sunlight. They may keep your home warm in winter, but wooden shutters keep heat out in summer. White shutters can block solar heat by closing the louvres and reflecting the sun with a white finish.

For those wondering, “Do wooden shutters block out light?” the answer is yes, but due to the natural design of louvres shutters, you won’t achieve a complete blackout finish. If you’re a customer who needs a pitch-black space for sleep, maybe opt for our blackout shutter solution, which is a combination of Shutters with a built-in blackout blind!

The classic look of shutters is designed with louvres, which are also perfect for ventilation. We recommend the best times to open your windows are during the early mornings and late evenings of summer, as they are the coolest part of the day!

Opening your shutter louvres in front of your open windows helps create beautiful ventilation throughout your home, whilst maintaining privacy as it’s not necessary to open the whole panel itself! Keeping them closed during the day will block out the sun’s rays and prevent your bedroom from turning into a sauna.

Light coloured blinds

Light Roller shades keep your room cool but bright

Just the same as white shutters, we recommend choosing light-coloured blinds for your bedroom during the summer, even if you wanted to swap them back as the seasons change. We know it can be the first thought to keep your windows open on a hot day, but it’s more likely that the hot air from outside will end up increasing the temperature of your home instead.

Keeping windows and blinds closed during the day helps keep your home much cooler, and then you can open them both up as the temperature drops in the evening. We also do a range of blackout blinds that can be installed to fit tight to your window frames, to completely block out light. These are perfect to improve sleep and the temperature of a room, especially when the summer days are much longer and brighter. Although most customers assume blackout shades have to be black to block out light, this is a misconception, and we stock a range of colours to suit your unique interiors.

Other tips for keeping cool

Fans and ventilation:

The easiest answer when people ask how to cool down a room is a good fan. Our bodies often struggle to sleep when they are too hot or cold, so our bedrooms need to be at a good temperature in order to get the best quality sleep.

A fan can be a game-changer when it comes to cooling your bedroom. Consider purchasing a high-quality, energy-efficient fan and place it strategically to circulate air effectively. To enhance the cooling effect, similar to an air conditioning unit, try placing a bowl of ice in front of the fan for an instant blast of refreshing air. By keeping a room cool during the day, you won’t be circulating hot air overnight using your fan.

Use breathable bedding materials:

Just as you swap out your winter wardrobe for a summer one, its also time to do the same with your bedding. Many of us have a thinner quilt and sheet (if you choose to use one), that are more breathable materials such as cotton or linen for the summer months. These fabrics allow for better airflow and moisture absorption, keeping you cool and comfortable throughout the night.

Use a de-humidifier

High humidity levels can make a room feel hotter and more uncomfortable. Running a dehumidifier in your bedroom can help remove excess moisture from the air, making the space feel cooler and more pleasant.

Optimize your lighting choices:

As well as being more energy-efficient, LED light bulbs produce less heat and therefore are a great replacement for Incandescent bulbs that emit more heat. If possible, its best to keep lights off all day long during summer, which is quite easy with our longer, brighter days. Where you can, swap out your current bulbs for LED ones, and you won’t just see a drop in temperature but energy use also!

Choose cool wall colours:

Cool, pastel paint or wallpaper paired with white shutters or blinds is the perfect summer combo

Just as you would for blinds or shutters, it is best to opt for light-coloured or neutral shades of paint and wallpaper for bedrooms also, as they reflect sunlight rather than absorb it, helping to maintain a cooler atmosphere in the room.
