Yesterday at The Shutter Studio we fitted two sets of bay window Basswood plantation shutters in West Wickham. The panels were manufactured using a 76mm louvre, which worked really well with the room’s decor, allowing the shutters to sit nice and tight to the window whilst still allowing maximum light into the room.

A 76mm Louvre, our medium size slat, gives our customer a perfect balance of both light and privacy, whether you opt for a center tilt option or a hidden tilt.

Basswood Shutters in West Wickham

What is Basswood? Basswood shutters are the longest-standing range of shutters available at The Shutter Studio. This material is a white American hardwood that is very user-friendly and often the preferred choice for joiners who specialise in carving and shaping due to being both strong and lightweight. Many of our customers are already familiar with this wood due to it being the preferred choice for the bodies of guitars and pianos for precisely these reasons.

Sustainably sourced, we believe that the natural characteristics make it pound-for-pound the most suitable material for plantation shutters. They are well established as a leading plantation shutter material that has withstood the tests of time.

When it comes to any of our bespoke shutters and benefitting from as much light control as possible, we recommend you try out these tips. If you want to maximise the light coming into the room without opening the louvres completely, tilt the shutters downwards to bring as much light into the room as possible. You may even find that directing the light in this way, especially with white shutters, brings more light into the room than before. No matter the material you chose, basswood or another of our collection, a white finish to your shutters will help maximise how bright your home is.

The Pine alternative

Even though Basswood is our longest reigning shutter material, our beautiful Monterey Pine is up there in popularity with our customers. Pine is all the way from New Zealand and has been used for many years by furniture and flooring experts, but now is a perfect choice for bespoke interior wooden shutters. This timber is light and durable and helps create a beautiful finish to any window style, including bay and sash windows.
