As summer approaches, many of us look forward to the long sunny days. However, those extended daylight hours can be a problem when it comes to getting a good night’s sleep and protecting your home from unwanted heat. A great solution is blackout blinds. This type of window shading can vastly improve the quality of your sleep, as well as helping to keep your house cool. In this blog we look at why you need blackout blinds this summer.

The problem with summer light
Whilst we don’t want to be moaning about summer, the extended daylight can prove a problem for light sleepers, as well as those with younger children. The last thing you want is to have light beaming into your room when you are trying to get to sleep or for your little one to be up and running around very early in the morning, particularly when sunrise is between 4am-5am and sunset is around 9.30pm during the height of summer. If you’re lacking a good night’s sleep due to the natural light, this can impact your mood and productivity during the day.

Benefits of blackout blinds
The obvious reason for blackout blinds is to effectively block out the light in your room to help you improve your sleep. However there also other reasons you may want to consider them.

They are energy-efficient

Pleated blackout blinds are great for energy efficiency

– blackout blinds play a significant role in regulating the temperature in your home. By keeping the sunlight and heat out, they help maintain a cooler indoor temperature, reducing the need for air conditioning. This can lead to significant energy savings during the hottest months.

They protect your furniture – It’s not just your skin that needs UV protection, extended exposure to sunlight can cause fading and damage to your furniture, carpets, and other interior elements. Blackout blinds protect your home from harmful UV rays, preserving the beauty and longevity of your furnishings.

Blackout blind options
Blackout fabrics are available for a number of blind styles, including roller, Roman and vertical blinds, allowing you to select the right type of shade for your home. Another option is a cassette blackout roller blind, which encases the shade into the fitted frame, providing the most effective blackout option of all blind types. Cassette blinds are great for standard flat windows in bedrooms and nurseries, providing a completely dark space and also work perfectly for roof windows.

Blackout shutters are a perfect shading combination

If you prefer shutters to blinds, you can also choose to combine the two with blackout shutters. With this option, a blackout blind sits behind the shutter panel to enhance the functionality of normal shutters. When fully closed, your room will be as close to complete darkness as possible allowing you to enjoy a peaceful night’s sleep.
