The Shutter Studio – The finest plantation wooden shutters

Its Friday afternoon and the office team are busy getting all the week’s shutters ordered and checked for next week’s manufacturing. Meanwhile, our sales team are getting prepared for the busy Saturday shift. I always enjoy the Friday afternoon calmness, often spending my time reflecting on the week’s company performance and how we can help provide a better service to our customers.

This week customers have had many questions as to which material is the best and most suitable to manufacture wooden shutters from. In short, the answer is hardwood shutters are the best. I have been in the Plantation shutter industry for a long time now with over 12 years of experience in supplying and installing shutters.

Hardwood or MDF?

In that time I have seen shutters and blinds that have been manufactured from every possible material. With the vast experience I have gained from our previous sister company, The Carpentry Studio, I would always recommend wooden shutters over MDF shutters, PVC shutters or any other shutter materials. PVC Shutters are within our range as we like to offer an alternative for customers looking to add shutters to their bathrooms or other moisture-prone areas of their homes, without the worry of water damage.

If your looking for high-quality window shutters, wooden shutters such as Basswood shutters or Pine shutters are the benchmark wooden shutter blinds. All other shutters such as MDF shutters, hybrid shutters, or PVC shutters are simply a compromise.

For example, if you’re looking to install full height shutters to bay windows, which are typically large windows, the interior shutters themselves need to be lighter in weight to take pressure off the hinges, in which hardwood is the best for. Even though they are lighter in weight, these plantation wooden shutters provide all the strength and rigidity required for a lasting shutter solution.

Our experience in MDF shutters, which helped us remove them from our range, has shown that the weight of the shutter, puts too much strain on the hinges, which results in the hinges moving and the shutters dropping out of line when in constant use.  Another area of concern with MDF shutters is the finish of the shutters. MDF shutters are wrapped and not spray painted. The wrap protects the shutters, however, the ends of louvres are unprotected and provide a point of entry for moisture.

When the moisture gets to MDF shutters, it causes the louvres to bow and the joints to fail. We have seen this happen on many occasion, and so reacting to the lack of quality shutters near me focused on providing a higher quality shutter. Aiming to be the best shutter company we decided to offer only hardwood and PVC shutters

Our wooden shutters are manufactured from hardwood only. I have seen that some shutter companies near me are using a hardwood shutter panel, yet are using an MDF frame as well. This only solves part of the problem with MDF shutters as the frame is the structural part of shutters. There is no question for us in answering “are mdf or wood shutters best?” when there really is no comparison.
